To laugh often and love much;
to win the respect of intelligent persons
and the affection of children;

to earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;

to leave the world a bit better;
whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;

to have played and laughed with enthusiasm
and sung with exultation;

to know that even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived . . .

this is to have succeeded.

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

This web site is a tribute to my father's life, a celebration of the contributions that he made to the lives of so many people, in so many ways. He gave to us all by being himself in all that he did. So many people knew him through one of the many passions in his life. This included his political career, his love for the outdoors, the many boards and commissions he was a member of, through his insurance agency, his law practice, his mentoring of young people or simply as a member of the Stafford community. He wore many hats and many people shared his life. He is dearly missed and remembered every day. It is impossible to live in Stafford and not see daily reminders of him.

During his life, my father never wanted the "thank you" that came along with the things he did for people, he was uncomfortable with emotional things such as demonstrations of appreciation. Many people did not have an opportunity to say goodbye or to tell him how much he impacted their lives. It is my hope that this web site will allow people to continue to celebrate my father's life, for even in his death, his legacy lives on.

At his memorial celebration it was said that "John is still here . . . He is in the trees and the stone walls." I never understood how much Stafford meant to my father until after he died, and now the town that meant so much to him, means so much more to me; as it's very existence symbolizes my father's life. He lived life to the fullest and left the world a truly better place. ~Jennifer Julian Davis
